The Advantage of Raised Bed Gardening in a
Raised Bed Garden Greenhouse:
In traditional gardens, soil compaction (compressed soil) can make it difficult
for air, water and roots to penetrate the soil mix. Raised bed gardening reduces
or eliminates compaction and allows air and water to reach the roots easily so
they can expand and grow. The Greenhouse Cover System for Raised Bed Garden
Frames lets you lay
the groundwork for a healthy and productive garden. Raised bed gardens are
inherently self draining since the growing media is above the normal soil line!
Poor soil conditions and drainage problems need not be corrected with
costly, messy and lengthy projects such as having your property re-graded or
having truckloads of top soil added to your yard just to add a garden or
flower bed. Because the growing environment is "raised" above the normal ground
level, raised bed gardens are self-draining. They provide for a way
to instantly and easily add flower beds and vegetable gardens to your home,
office, or school thereby allowing you to start gardening almost immediately!
How to Make Your Raised Bed Garden
Greenhouse More Productive:
The fertility of the soil is improved by
adding organic compost, composted manure, and natural forms of minerals. Dig the soil, in the beds, to a depth of about 2 feet (double digging),
so that the root growth and drainage penetrate the soil easily. Design the beds to your climate and soil type. Wet climates do better with
higher beds; they dry faster because more soil is exposed. Sandy soils
dry rapidly and need to have lower beds.
The tendency for beds to dry faster and warm sooner becomes
a problem when spring and summer are windy, hot and dry. This means that frequent watering becomes necessary.
Mulching can also help keep temperatures cooler and help retain moisture in
the soil. Mulch the beds with grass clippings or straw to prevent changes in soil
moisture or temperature. Monitor moisture levels in the beds. Be ready to provide extra water
to the crops during stressful times. Harvest or remove plants as they begin to crowd each other or if they
appear diseased.
Lack of soil moisture and temperature fluctuations can make sensitive
crops develop problems - lettuce can turn bitter; squash, tomatoes
cucumbers and peppers will have more blossom end rot; and peas
will stop flowering. This requires monitoring and appropriate action -
watering and mulching - to eliminate these problems. The close planting within raised beds may lead to reduced air circulation
and encourage diseases. Using intercropping and succession planting
will help reduce this problem. Dressing with organic compost also help alleviate
this problem. Soil beds can sink approximately 3 inches each year.
Adding 3 to 6 inches of organic compost or top soil will restore the soil bed. Structure your plants diagonally to get the
most out of your garden. Place your tallest
plants in the back of the bed to prevent
them from shading smaller plants. To ventilate, open to desired height and clamp the open cover
to the arched rod. The greenhouse design depends on the sun for its heat and
light, especially when the sun stays low to the horizon (lowest in Winter). If
you use the Raised Bed Garden Greenhouse in
the Winter, place the longest side of the unit for southern exposure. If only used
in the late Winter, Spring and fall place the longest side of the unit slightly
more toward the east.
Care and Maintenance: Wash with hot water and soap. Do not use bleach or abrasive cleaners.
