Finally!
The Tools You Need to Create Your Own Rainwater Collection System
The Rain Water Diverter System is easy to install and
maintain, and is adaptable to any 2" x 3" or 3" x 4" downspout. The
Rain Water Diverter System works in tandem with a rain barrel or tank
that you provide. Typically, you can find barrels and large tanks to
meet this need at many local retailers and suppliers (Abundant Earth does not provide rain
barrels). The Rain Water Diverter System attaches to your
downspout and diverts rainwater from your gutter system into the rain
barrel while allowing leaves and other large debris to pass through the
diverter and out the downspout. The result is naturally soft rainwater available
and ready whenever you need it to water gardens and lawns, trees and
houseplants, or for other non-potable uses.
Rainwater has many valuable applications for your home,
neighborhood, business or farm. It can be used to water plants, lawns
and gardens, wash your car and provide livestock with drinking water.
The water you collect by using the Rain Water Diverter System can also
be used for industrial cooling needs, and as a back-up water supply for
your home or business. The potential ecological impact of using the
Rain Water Diverter System is essentially unlimited. The concept is
simple – the more Rain Water Diverter Systems we install in
our homes and businesses, the more water we are able to conserve.
The
Rain Water Diverter System offers the following benefits to you and the
planet:
- Rain barrels provide naturally distilled rainwater, and
ambient water temperature ideal for plant life
- Helps with water bill cost savings
- Rain barrels hold water in reserve for seasonal droughts
and dry spells
- Offers mosquito-proof design
- Durable design withstands a wide spectrum of seasonal
temperatures
- Rain barrels lessen the strain on reservoirs and
groundwater aquifers

Installation
Overview
- Contact local sources and obtain a suitable barrel or tank
to connect to your new Rain Water Diverter System.
- Conduct a site evaluation to determine an ideal location
for your Rain Water Diverter System and rain barrel.
- Drill holes into the rain barrel to accommodate inlet hose
and high-flow spigot with hose connection.
- Insert the Rain Water Diverter System into your existing
downspout by cutting a section of the spout and installing the System,
in order
to direct water from your gutter into the barrel.
- Connect the diverter to the barrel with the hose provided
in the Rain Water Diverter System kit.
- When the rain barrel is full, the water will be re-diverted
through the Rain Water Diverter System and directed back to your
gutter, keeping your original water drainage system in tact.
Upkeep and Maintenance
You should disconnect your rain barrel before
the first hard freeze. If you empty all water out of your barrel, you
can keep it attached for a few additional weeks; just make sure you are
completely emptying it every time it fills. We also recommend washing
the barrel when disconnecting it for the season. Use an environmentally
friendly solution of 2 tsp. of castile soap (Dr. Bronner's Organic) + 2
tsp. vinegar or lemon juice per gallon of water for cleaning. Simply
swish the solution around inside the barrel then rinse the inside of
the barrel out with a garden hose. A concentrated spray nozzle will
work well to remove residue from the inside of the barrel.
You should wait until after the first good rain of the springtime has
fallen before reattaching your rain barrel. The first hard rain should
flush much of the accumulated debris from the roof and gutters.
Attaching your rain barrel before this point may increase the chances
of clogging the diverter. Though rare, diverters can clog with debris.
Be sure to keep an eye on your Rain Water Diverter, and make sure you
find and quickly clear any clogs that may occur.
Frequently
Asked Questions
My roof is pretty small. Is it worth it for me use a
Rain Water Diverter System?
Generally speaking, yes. One inch of rain on a
1000-square-foot roof will generate about 600 gallons of runoff. To
calculate the amount of water that will run off your roof during an
average rainfall, multiply the square footage of your roof by 600, then
divide by 1000. Most barrels are 55 gallons, and they fill surprisingly
quickly in a decent rain.
Why are rain barrels not included as a part of the
Rain Water Diverter System?
The types of containers that can be reused as a rain barrels are
readily available in most areas from a number of sources, thus
eliminating waste (reduced carbon footprint) and cutting the cost for
the end user.
Are there ways I can disguise my barrel?
In order to ensure your barrel does not affect the aesthetic of your
home's exterior, we recommend placing chicken wire or wood/bamboo
lattice around the barrel and training one of many native vines to grow
up the wire. Another option is to build an aesthetically pleasing
enclosure for the barrel. Finally you can place the barrel among
bushes/shrubs to hide it from view. The possibilities are endless.
Can I drink the water from my rain barrel?
No, the rain water you collect in your barrel is not intended for human
consumption.
What happens when my rain barrel is full?
When your rain barrel is full, rainwater will be re-directed through
the Rain Water Diverter System and back to your gutter.
Why is storm water bad for lakes and other natural bodies of
water?
The water that falls directly from the sky into the lakes, rivers,
streams and oceans is not usually the problem (unless the rainwater has
been acidified by pollution). The real problem is the storm water that
runs off our buildings, driveways, roads, and parking lots over
polluted impervious surfaces and ends up flowing directly into bodies
of water. This runoff water can pick up pet and livestock
waste, fertilizers, pesticides, detergents, trash, invasive plant
seeds, leaves, grass clippings, automotive liquids like motor oil,
antifreeze, brake fluid, and more. All of these elements have
detrimental effects on the quality of the water in lakes, rivers,
streams and oceans.
Can I introduce the supply of water I acquire in my rain
barrel into my home or business plumbing?
It is possible to utilize water from your rain barrel for certain home
or business water needs (e.g. toilets) but it may be a complex process
to integrate into your existing system. Abundant Earth is unable to
assist or advise with these installations or uses. Please contact a
water professional for advice or installation expertise.
Can I have someone install the Rain Water Diverter
System for me?
A local professional may be able to assist you in getting your Rain
Water Diverter System up and running. We recommend contacting your
local gutter installation company to determine whether or not this is a
possibility.
What kind of barrel do I have to use?
Any closed tank (metal or plastic) of any size and shape will serve as
an adequate container to collect the rain water. If you are reusing a
container from a factory or manufacturer, please keep in mind that
the barrel must be a food-grade container and must
not have contained harmful chemicals during any of its prior functions
or uses.
Can I add more than two barrels?
Yes, you may daisy-chain as many barrels as you want.
Can I utilize the water in my barrel with a soaker hose?
Yes, simply thread the hose onto the high-flow spigot.
Can I hook up my sprinkler to the system?
Unfortunately, not at this time.
Testimonials
I love the concept of utilizing the abundant rain water we get here in
the Northwest for watering my garden. My plants love it!
- Rick, Oregon
What a great product! Not only does it save water, but it also
helps protect our oceans from storm water runoff...
- Ryan, California
Now more than ever, I know that it is so important to do my
part to conserve our renewable resources. I will be encouraging my
neighbors, friends and families to check out the Rain Water Diverter
System and participate in the 'revolution'!
- Elizabeth, Minnesota
What a great idea to put your rainwater to good use! I only
wish I would have started using it sooner.
- Justin, Louisiana
My plants loved all that free water I gave them this summer. All my
container and ground flowers blossomed with good health after getting a
drink of barrel water when they needed it. And I felt so smug about
using that soft rain water instead of hard tap water to help them
bloom. I am delighted to be a good water guardian and do my part to
keep my Sister Earth healthier by using water recycled from the heavens
instead of forced out of the ground.
