THE ALPHA WAVE

The Alpha Wave Platform Bed - A simple yet solid platform bed at a reasonable price in American Red Oak, Eastern Maple and Bamboo.

Clean lines and strong joints make a well built, affordable piece of furniture that will last a lifetime. The Alpha Wave is available in Twin, Extra Long Twin, Full and Queen sizes only. Mix and match "waves" to create your own unique and personal platform bed. The Alpha Wave bed mimics the constantly changing wave patterns found in nature. Through the combination of different wave patterns, and the framing of the space between the waves, our Alpha Wave beds are an expression of the person who chooses them.

For example, a single wave over a double wave gives a unique look, by simply swapping the waves a completely different look is achieved. Flat (no waves), single waves, double waves, triple waves or quad (4) waves (only available on Full and Queen beds) are available to mix or match. To achieve an even more unique look, add the extra tall footboard to your bed. This option raises the footboard 7 inches by adding a wave of your choice to our standard footboard. Between all of the headboard, footboard, wood and finish options available, the Alpha Wave offers one of the most unique opportunities to create the perfect platform bed of your choice. With its hand rubbed finish and unbeatable price, you have a real winner.

All of our Southwestern platform bed and bedroom furniture products are made with the finest second-growth (no old growth) American Red-Oak and Eastern Maple. All Southwestern furnishings are also available in beautiful Standard and Caramelized Moso Bamboo. All platform beds are available either unfinished, finished with a hand rubbed Linseed Oil, or finished with a Dark Linseed Oil (oak only). Our unfinished and Linseed Oil finish options are absolutely free. All of our products have concealed connectors and are easy to assemble.

Options: Click on the "Add to Cart" button and then select your options.

  • Poplar Slats (additional fee): All platform beds come standard with solid Pine slats, held together with nylon straps, for supporting the mattress or futon. Some folks, especially those who are chemically sensitive, prefer to order the optional hardwood Poplar wood slats held together with natural jute straps. The solid wood Poplar slats give off less resinous wood odors that may affect the chemically sensitive.
  • Extra Slat Upgrade (additional fee): Are you concerned about needing extra support for your mattress, pad or futon? Our platform beds are made with futon, mattress and foam pad requirements in mind and are built to offer sturdy support. Both our standard pine slats (solid Pine) and poplar slats have about 3" of space between each slat. However, we also offer the option to increase the amount of slats on your bed to create a nearly solid surface (about 1/4" space between each slat for Pine or Poplar) for both extra support and for mattresses, pads, and futons that require a flat surface for your platform bed.
  • Finish: Our platform beds are finished with a hand-rubbed Linseed Oil. You may also request your bed come unfinished or finished with a Dark Linseed Oil (available oak only--additional fee). For persons with chemical sensitivities, we recommend ordering unfinished and applying your own finish.
  • Wood: You have a choice of either second growth solid American Red Oak, second growth solid Eastern Maple or solid Moso Bamboo (strips of Bamboo are laminated together into solid boards).
  • King Sizes: Not available in the Alpha Wave.
  • Underbed Drawers (purchased in sets of 2): Freestanding Underbed Drawers (34" x 17" x 6"h ea.) are available to match your bed. These drawers sit on casters and are not attached to the bed.
  • Same Wood Sides Drawer Upgrade (additional fee): Our standard drawers come with either Oak, Maple or Bamboo fronts, and Poplar sides. If you think the sides of your drawers will be visible from the end of the bed, you may want to order the "Same Wood Side" upgrade. These upgraded Underbed Drawers use the same wood on the sides that you choose for your drawer fronts--either Oak, Maple or Bamboo.

A Few Alpha Wave Platform Bed Choices

  • Headboard Waves: The Alpha Wave platform bed offers two customizable headboard crosspieces (in addition to a third flat lower crosspiece that is included with the bed).  We call these crosspieces "waves."  For each of the two upper waves, choose from a variety of configurations. Choose FLAT (no waves--straight across with no curves), SINGLE WAVE (arch), DOUBLE WAVE, TRIPLE WAVE or QUAD(4) WAVE (only available on Full and Queen beds). Mix and match to suit your taste!  Shown above, from left to right, are;  1. Single Top and Bottom Headboard Wave,  2. Double Top and Bottom Headboard Wave,  3. Quad Top Headboard Wave with Double Bottom Headboard Wave,  4. Triple Top Headboard Wave with Single Bottom Headboard Wave
  • Leg Height Option: Add 3" or 5" to the legs of you bed. This will make the platform sit higher and the space under the bed (standard height under the side rail is 10.5"). Alternatively, you may lower the leg height by 4" or 7". Please note, if you choose this option, the optional Underbed Drawers will not fit under the bed.

  • You cannot add to the Leg Height option (listed above) and add the Extra Headboard Gap option. They are not compatible.

More About Bamboo:
Bamboo is another ecologically friendly and beautiful choice for your platform bed frame and furnishings. Since Bamboo is a grass, Bamboo grows and matures much quicker than a tree. Within five years of sprouting, the walls of the culms (the Bamboo stalks) will have thickened and hardened and will be ready for harvest. That means every year 15 to 20 percent of the forest can be harvested without clear cutting. Compare that to a hardwood forest and you will see that Bamboo is a very productive and sustainable plant material for making furniture. Unlike quick growing pine (aka "trash pine") trees that many timber companies have planted in place of native trees and forest, and take at least 25 years to grow large enough to harvest for pulp or cheap framing lumber, Bamboo grows quickly and has fine building qualities. Bamboo is also very hard--harder than rock maple, which is one of the hardest of North American trees. Using Bamboo means less dings and dents and a more durable product. Since the very straight culm is split and not sawn, there are no curls in the grain, which means Bamboo is much less likely to break.

Our Bamboo boards have a beautiful exotic look and are available in standard (very similar in color and shade to Eastern Maple) or caramelized (which is similar in color and shade to our Red Oak). Both are available in Linseed Oil finish (darken the color only very slightly--mainly the Linseed Oil protects the Bamboo) or unfinished. Bamboo boards are constructed by laminating strips of bamboo together in order to create strong dimensional lumber for building fine furniture. This is a very effective way to construct Bamboo lumber. However please note, although rare, small cracks may sometimes be present and are considered normal in laminated Bamboo boards. These cracks, if present, will not be over 1/32” in width and will not affect the structural integrity of the furniture. New Bamboo may have a slightly grassy scent which should dissipate over time.
