About
Organic Egyptian Cotton
By far the finest variety of cotton found anywhere in
the world is
organic Egyptian cotton. Because of the humid weather and rich soil
around the Nile delta,
it is possible to grow a remarkable cotton having especially long and
delicate fibers. Cotton grown in Egypt typically has a staple length of
over 2-1/4".
This is twice the size of that found in generic cotton and 60% longer
than Pima cotton. This allows
it to be spun into ultra-fine yarns that are inherently silkier,
softer, more lustrous and more durable than
cotton grown anywhere else. For this reason, Egyptian cotton is used to
make some of the finest table linens in the world.
It is also a highly sought after material in clothing and bedding for
its superior warmth and rich texture.
Growing and Harvesting
Abundant Earth's organic Egyptian cotton is grown
according to strict
organic guidelines for agriculture without the use of synthetic
fertilizers or pesticides. Only
naturally produced compost is used as a fertilizing agent. Special
growing methods employing no chemicals have been developed for the
cotton. The
cultivating of cotton without pesticides or insecticides ensures that
the cotton remains
100% organic, protecting the health of those who purchase the cotton as
well as the people working on the cotton fields. The Center of Organic
Agriculture in Egypt regularly controls and certifies the
cotton as genuinely "organic" once all the qualifying
criterion have been met.
Ginning and Spinning
After the harvest, organic Egyptian cotton is brought to the ginning
mill where the cotton seeds are carefully separated from the fibers.
The cotton is
washed, combed and pressed into big bales. Then it is spun in one of
the most
modern spinning mills in Egypt. Due to the stringent preparation steps
of cleaning, mixing and combing,
along with the careful spinning itself, an especially high quality of
organic cotton yarn is achieved. A comparably high quality is reached
in less than 5% of all yarn in the world.
Dying and Knitting
The organic Egyptian cotton yarn then goes through the dyeing and
knitting process.
Our organic cotton is not bleached. Some is left in the natural cream
tone of the raw
cotton and some is dyed. The dyeing of the cotton yarn is accomplished
using metal-free colors, containing no harmful chemicals. The aim
during the dyeing process is to use only such agents and processes
as are environmentally sound and, at the same time, ensure the highest
possible quality. The organic cotton is evenly dyed and should not fade
out even after heavy use and many washes.
The cotton yarn is handled with great care during the knitting or
weaving process. All auxiliaries
used must either be recyclable or biodegradable to at least 90%. Only
natural starch, for instance, is used in the dyeing process.
