THE RANCH

The Ranch Platform Bed - A simple yet solid platform bed at a reasonable price in American Red Oak, Eastern Maple and Bamboo.

Clean lines and strong joints make a well built, affordable piece of furniture that will last a lifetime. The Ranch is available in all sizes. The Ranch bed was created to capture the essence of the ranch lands of America, the doweled headboard is an age old design that has always been a favorite. It comes standard with a 28" headboard. You may add a matching footboard (adds 7" bringing footboard height to 21"), or a set of 2 Underbed Drawers (32" x 17" x 6"h ea.).

All of our Southwestern platform bed and bedroom furniture products are made with the finest second-growth (no old growth) American Red-Oak and Eastern Maple. All Southwestern furnishings (except for the Taos Sleigh Beds) are also available in beautiful Standard and Caramelized Moso Bamboo. All platform beds are available either unfinished, finished with a hand rubbed Danish Tung Oil, or finished with a Dark Walnut Oil (oak only). Our unfinished and Danish Tung Oil finish options are absolutely free. All of our products have concealed connectors and are easy to assemble.

Options: Click on the "Add to Cart" button and then select your options.
  • Poplar Slats (additional fee): All platform beds come standard with Pine plywood slats, held together with nylon straps, for supporting the mattress or futon. Some folks, especially those who are chemically sensitive, prefer to order the optional hardwood Poplar wood slats held together with natural jute straps. The solid wood Poplar slats give off less resinous wood odors that may affect the chemically sensitive.
  • Extra Slat Upgrade (additional fee): Are you concerned about needing extra support for your mattress, pad or futon? Our platform beds are made with futon, mattress and foam pad requirements in mind and are built to offer sturdy support. Pine slats (pine plywood) have about 2-3/4" of space between each slat, and Poplar slats have about 3-1/2" of space between each slat. However, we also offer the option to increase the amount of slats on your bed to create a nearly solid surface (about 1/2" space between each slat for Pine or Poplar) for both extra support and for mattresses, pads, and futons that require a flat surface for your platform bed.
  • Finish: Our platform beds are finished with a hand-rubbed Danish Tung Oil. You may also request your bed come unfinished or finished with a Dark Walnut Oil (available oak only--additional fee). For persons with chemical sensitivities, we recommend ordering unfinished and applying your own finish.
  • Wood: You have a choice of either second growth solid American Red Oak, second growth solid Eastern Maple or solid Moso Bamboo (strips of Bamboo are laminated together into solid boards).
  • King Sizes: Be sure to specify your preference for either an Eastern King (Est-King) or California King (Cal-King).
  • Same Wood Sides Drawer Upgrade (additional fee): Our standard drawers come with either Oak, Maple or Bamboo fronts, and Poplar sides. If you think the sides of your drawers will be visible from the end of the bed, you may want to order the "Same Wood Side" upgrade. These upgraded Underbed Drawers use the same wood on the sides that you choose for your drawer fronts--either Oak, Maple or Bamboo.
  • Additional Leg Height (additional fee): Add 3" to the Leg Height and raise the bed by 3 inches. This will raise the platform (where the mattress sits on the slats) from 12" to 15". You cannot add to the Leg Height and add the Extra Headboard Gap option listed below. They are not compatible.
  • Headboard Gap Option for Tall Mattresses (additional fee): Do you have an extra thick mattress or futon (thicker than 8.5 inches)? No problem. You can increase the space between the top of the slats and the bottom cross piece on the headboard and enjoy a fuller view of your headboard above your tall mattress or futon.
  • You cannot add to the Leg Height option (listed above) and add the Extra Headboard Gap option. They are not compatible.

More About Bamboo:
Bamboo Ranch Platform Bed Bamboo is another ecologically friendly and beautiful choice for your platform bed frame and furnishings. Since Bamboo is a grass, Bamboo grows and matures much quicker than a tree. Within five years of sprouting, the walls of the culms (the Bamboo stalks) will have thickened and hardened and will be ready for harvest. That means every year 15 to 20 percent of the forest can be harvested without clear cutting. Compare that to a hardwood forest and you will see that Bamboo is a very productive and sustainable plant material for making furniture. Unlike quick growing pine (aka "trash pine") trees that many timber companies have planted in place of native trees and forest, and take at least 25 years to grow large enough to harvest for pulp or cheap framing lumber, Bamboo grows quickly and has fine building qualities. Bamboo is also very hard--harder than rock maple, which is one of the hardest of North American trees. Using Bamboo means less dings and dents and a more durable product. Since the very straight culm is split and not sawn, there are no curls in the grain, which means Bamboo is much less likely to break.

Our Bamboo boards have a beautiful exotic look and are available in standard (very similar in color and shade to Eastern Maple) or caramelized (which is similar in color and shade to our Red Oak). Both are available in Danish Oil finish (darken the color only very slightly--mainly the Danish Tung Oil protects the Bamboo) or unfinished. Bamboo boards are constructed by laminating strips of Bamboo together in order to create strong dimensional lumber for building fine furniture. This is a very effective way to construct Bamboo lumber. However please note, although rare, small cracks may sometimes be present and are considered normal in laminated Bamboo boards. These cracks, if present, will not be over 1/32” in width and will not affect the structural integrity of the furniture. New Bamboo may have a slightly grassy scent which should dissipate over time.
