Organic Cotton Only or
Organic Cotton and Natural Wool Futons and Japanese-style Shiki Futons

Our organic futons are not just
hand made, they're hands down the best futons made in America. We use
the highest quality 100% organic cotton batting
as the core of all our
handmade Organic Cotton Only and Organic Cotton and Natural Wool
Futons. Unlike most synthetic materials and foams, organic
cotton
batting conforms to your body's curves and
allows your body to breathe. We then surround the organic cotton
batting with pure and natural chemical-free wool and finally cover the
batting with durable
organic cotton fabric ticking. Optionally, with a doctor's
prescription, you
may order our futons with no wool added (*see below for details).
No pesticides or chemical treatments are ever
used in any of Abundant Earth's futons. Our futons are pure
organic and chemical-free!
Different thicknesses
to accommodate different needs and
desires:
AbundantEarth.com's
organic futons are available in two different
thicknesses. When new,
the Standard Futon is approximately 8" thick
at its widest or thickest
point. With use, it will eventually compact down to about 6 or 7 inches
thick. The Standard Futon is the thickness of choice (and for many the
most comfortable choice) for conventional slatted
platform beds. Abundant
Earth also offers a thinner Japanese-style Shiki Futon (also know as
Shikibuton). The Shiki Futon is approximately 4"
thick when new, and
eventually will compress down to approximately 3 plus inches. The Shiki
is too
thin to use on a conventionally slatted platform bed frame. However,
Shikis are an excellent choice for using on a Japanese-style tatami
mat/bed. Some people prefers to purchase two Shiki futons and layer
them one on top of the other rather than order one of our Standard
Futons. Layered Shiki futons work very well on slatted
platform bed frames. This layered approach make turning, flipping,
sunning, moving and/or storing the futon much easier--especially for
people who have difficulty lifting. Layering is a more expensive
choice. However, the benefits of layering may be well worth it to you.

What
will my Abundant Earth Organic Futon feel like?
Our Organic Cotton Only and Organic Cotton and
Wool Futons are made of all natural fibers--like the true and natural
bedding surfaces that humans have been sleeping on for thousands of
years. There are no synthetics such as memory foam or polyester fluff
in these futons. Natural fiber futons feel different that synthetically
altered futons. The natural fiber futon will start out softer, but as
you sleep on your futon and the fibers will compress and the futon will
get firmer over time. Eventually, with regular flipping and turning,
your futon will become a relatively firm sleeping surface. Organic
Cotton Only futons tend to be firmer than Organic Cotton and Wool
Futons as the wool fibers add a just a bit of springiness and softness
to the futon that cotton only is unable to provide. Please also keep in
mind that a thicker futon is less firm and generally more comfortable
for most people than a thinner futon. By the way, Abundant Earth
Organic Futons make outstanding sleeping surface for your children as
they provide long-lasting natural skeletal support for growing bodies.
*Flame Retardants, the Federal
Government
and Wool:
All of Abundant Earth's organic cotton futons are
free of chemical flame retardants. Nevertheless, federal law requires all
sleeping surfaces sold in the United States must incorporate a flame
retardant. Our pure and natural chemical-free wool acts as a natural
flame retardant without the addition of any chemicals. However, some
people do not want wool in their futon. Don't panic! Keep reading....
An exemption is
allowed for people with medical need. Because our Organic Cotton Only
Futons
contains chemical flame retardants or wool, a medical doctor's,
naturopath's, or chiropractor's prescription (must be licensed to write
prescriptions)
is required to purchase this bed
in order to meet federal flame retardant requirements. This prescription may be faxed to us at
847-485-5169 or emailed to sales@abundantearth.com and should say something
like "Patient needs bed without wool or chemical flame retardants."
Chemical-Free Natural Wool as a Flame Retardant:
Some manufacturers add "natural" flame retardants to their
outer futon
fabric (this fabric is also known as "ticking") such as boric
acid. However, we strongly recommend against these products as they
still may pose their own set of hazards to one's health and well-being.
By contrast, a natural flame retardant we do recommend for those who
are interested is our pure and natural chemical-free wool. Because wool
acts as a
flame retardant, our futons with added wool, such as the Organic Cotton
and Natural Wool Futons, do NOT require a prescription.
Our chemical-free natural wool is from free-range sheep and no
chemicals are ever used on the sheep or in the processing of
the wool. The wool in our Standard Futons and Shiki Futons will satisfy
the federal flame retardant requirement. Wool also
adds extra resiliency (adding
a hint of softness to your futon) and improved thermal
comfort (cooler in hot humid
weather and warmer in cool dry weather), and anti-microbial benefits
from the natural lanolin in the wool. Wool also helps (just a little) with dust mite
resistance as it. However, if you
are concerned about maximizing dust mite protection for your futon and
you, you
will still want to add an Organic Cotton Dust Mite Barrier Cloth Cover
to your order.
Natural
Wool ~ Grown and Processed without Harsh Chemicals:
Our pure and natural wool is
processed without bleaches, carbonizing acids, formaldehyde, dyes, or
animal cruelty. The sheep are raised cruelty-free and are allowed to
roam free on the range. The sheep and the wool are raised in
chemical-free and pesticide-free environment. In fact, the wool is
completely untreated is except for being washed with water. While not
"certified" organically grown, the
sheep and wool are grown and processed according to organic
guidelines.

More
About Chemical-Free Natural Wool's Inherent Qualities:
Regulates Temperature:
Wool is a natural insulator and helps to keep you warm in the winter.
Wool is also naturally breathable to keep you cooler in the summer.
Wool fibers help to keep your body at the optimal temperature for
maximum comfort and rest.
Naturally Absorbent Fiber: Wool fiber's
coil-like shape pulls excess heat and moisture from your skin while you
sleep. Wool fabrics can absorb up to 30% of their weight without
feeling heavy or damp. The absorbent fibers "breathe" by wicking away
moisture from the body and releasing it into the air. This also aids in
cooling you during warm humid weather.
Mildew and Mold Resistant: Wool's natural
resistance to mildews and molds comes from the way it repels moisture,
and lets moisture pass through it's fibers without holding the
moisture. (Please note that wool is mold and mildew resistant--not mold
and mildew proof).
Perfect Insulator: Wool is warm in winter
and cool in the summer because of its hydrophilic ability to wick away
excess moisture. In the winter, wool removes moisture from the skin to
keep warm and dry and wool’s insulating qualities trap dry air and
warmth near the skin. In the summer, wool’s coil-like shape pulls
excess heat and moisture from your skin helping to stay cooler.
Naturally Fire Retardant: Wool has natural
fire-retardant properties. (High moisture content and protective
lanolin is resistant to combustion). It can resist flame without the
chemical treatment involved in fireproofing.
Naturally Non-Allergenic:
Wool, when separated by fabric casing, is almost entirely
non-allergenic. Although some may have a rare natural allergy to
lanolin, the oil found in wool, most people's allergy to wool is a
reaction to the many harsh and toxic chemicals that go into the
treatment, and finishing of conventional wool. Serious chemical
abrasives are routinely used to wash raw wool for processing. Chlorine
and mothproofing chemicals are routinely applied to conventional wool
before turning it into a finished product. Our wool has none of these
harsh chemicals applied.
Organic
Protective Pads, Zippered Covers, Toppers and More...
For proper care and protection of your new futon, we
strongly recommend using an Organic Cotton Flannel Mattress Pad,
a Pure Eco Wool Puddle Pad or
one of our other futon mattress protectors. You may also wish
to add an extra layer of protection to your futon with an
Organic Cotton Zippered Futon Cover (in
Colors) or Organic Cotton
Barrier Cloth Cover. All of these items maybe viewed HERE...and don't forget to top your new
futon
with Organic Cotton Sheets, Organic Pillows and an
Organic Cotton
Comforter or Blanket or Topper (Top Mattress).
Zipper?
All of our organic futons have a
small-gauge zipper closure
installed along the edge of the futon. This zipper is installed as an
aid used during the construction of your futon. The zippered closure is
for construction purposes only and is not intended to be used as a
functional zipper. If you prefer to have your futon entirely stitched
without a zipper, please contact Abundant Earth at 1-888-513-2784 for a
quotation. Futons without zippers are generally about 50% more
expensive than our standard futons and are not returnable under any
circumstances.
Organic
Futon Care:
Organic futons need to breathe. The best sleeping surface for your new
futon is a slatted wood surface such as a platform bed for our Standard
Futon or a Tatami Mat for a Shiki Futon. Futons should not be placed
directly on a solid
surface such as the floor, as they can begin to mold or mildew where
the surface of the futon meets the surface of the cooler floor. Be sure
to flip (end-to-end and side-to-side) and roll your futon frequently.
This will help air the futon as
well as stretch out the natural fibers after they compress with use.
Futons cannot we washed. If you stain or spill on your futon, be sure
to clean up the area with a rag or sponge. Oxiclean or similar may help
clean stains or aromatic spills. You must be sure to dry the area
thoroughly. You may need to place your futon in the sun (UV light from
the sun helps kill mold/mildew) or use a hair dryer (carefully) to
ensure the entire futon dries properly and thoroughly.
